Nigeria clinches UN Law Commission seat - 18/11/2006

 
 

Nigeria 's Minister of Justice Bayo Ojo has clinched a seat on the Geneva-based UN International Law Commission (ILC), local media reported on Friday. 

Ojo won 137 votes out of the 186 UN member states, who cast their votes in the 2006 ILC elections Thursday in New York . 

President of the 61st session of the UN General Assembly Bahrain's Rasheeda Al-Khalifa announced the results after the election at the UN headquarters. 

Ten African countries, comprising Nigeria , Kenya , Gabon , Tunisia , Cameroon , Egypt , Mali , Libya , South Africa and Mozambique are contesting for the eight African seats. 

Three Nigerians, who were also former ministers of justice, had held seats on the ILC in the past. 

Established in 1948, the ILC mandate is charged with the development and codification of international law.
